Privacy Policy

Otterly is a learning platform for children, used by parents and by teachers. This policy explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have. It is written to reflect how the product actually works — not boilerplate. Because Otterly is built for kids, we collect as little as possible and never sell personal information.

Who this applies to

Otterly has two kinds of adult account holders — parents/guardians and teachers — and child profiles that belong to a parent. Children never create their own accounts and never sign in independently.

What we collect

Parent and teacher accounts

• Email address (for the account and essential transactional email).
• For teachers, an optional display name.
• Account and class records you create, and a plan tier (all plans are free in v1).

Child profiles

We deliberately minimize what a child profile holds:

• A first name only — no last name.
• An avatar (a letter and a color) and a grade band.
• Learning progress: skills practiced, mastery, session history, stars, and streaks.

We do not collect a child's last name, email, photo, precise birth date, or any contact information.

Parental consent (COPPA-aligned)

Before any child profile can be created, the account holder must attest that they are the parent or legal guardian. We record that attestation with a timestamp. Teachers cannot create child profiles, and a teacher can never link a child to a class — only the owning parent can do that by entering a class join code. This keeps class enrollment two-sided and consent-based.

How teachers get access

A teacher sees a student's progress only after the child's parent enters that teacher's class join code. Access is recorded in a join record and is time-bounded — it ends automatically at the end of the class term, or earlier if the parent revokes it. Teacher access is read-only. The child's data always belongs to the family and is never altered or removed by anything a teacher does.

How we use information

• To run the adaptive engine — placing each child and choosing what to practice next.
• To show parents and authorized teachers a child's progress.
• To send essential account email (e.g. consent confirmation, account-deletion confirmation). We do not send marketing email to children, ever.
• To keep the service secure and diagnose errors.

Trackers and analytics

There are no third-party advertising or tracking technologies in the kids' app. Our marketing pages (the site you are reading) may use privacy-respecting, cookieless analytics that do not build advertising profiles and collect no personal information from children.

Service providers

We use a small set of vendors strictly to operate Otterly — for authentication, database hosting, transactional email, and error monitoring. They process data only on our instructions and may not use it for their own purposes.

Data retention and deletion

You are in control of your data. Account holders can request deletion at any time from account settings.

• Deleting a parent account deletes all of its child profiles and ends every teacher's access to them.
• Deleting a teacher account archives that teacher's classes and ends their access to students. Children's data is never removed as a side effect.
• Deleted records enter a short grace period and are then permanently purged.

Your rights

• Access / export: download a copy of the data in your account at any time.
• Deletion: delete your account and associated data as described above.
• Correction: edit profile details from the app.

We keep an internal audit log of sensitive actions (such as account and child creation, consent attestation, class joins, data export, and deletion) to keep these operations accountable.
